In The News...

The Myhre Equine Clinic (MEC) is pleased to announce that on July 1, 2009, we will begin accepting cases for our newest cutting edge imaging modality, a Magnetic Resonance Imaging unit (MRI). This technology enables us to precisely evaluate pathology within tendons, ligaments, joints, and bones localized by physical examination and nuclear scintigraphy with unsurpassed clarity. The MRI completes the picture of the location and extent of the problem, which in turn, enables the referring veterinarian and farrier to provide the best treatment for the horse.

The Myhre Equine Clinic is the first equine hospital on the east coast to install the "ELLEGRO." This state of the art MRI complements other state of the art imaging modalities, such as Nuclear Scintigraphy, both of which will be available in northern New England only at MEC. This MRI revolutionizes M.R. Imaging as it provides the "most cost effective solution available, without compromising diagnostic quality," according to Dr. Alexia McKnight, former Radiologist at the University of Pennsylvania at New Bolton Center.

The Myhre Equine Clinic has a long history of being the first in New England to acquire new technology such as the "ELLEGRO." We have also maintained a long term commitment to education of this technology with a legacy of veterinary, technician, farrier, and owner continuing education conferences held at MEC for nearly three decades. The acquisition and benefits of the ELLEGRO were presented at this year's conference, February 26th and 27th.The first in the nation Academy of Equine Science, our therapeutic riding program, and the recent Kentucky Derby Fundraiser are the further examples of our continued dedication to the education of our youth, clients, and equine caregivers throughout New England.

MRI examinations will begin at $1,200 per case, all inclusive, but can vary depending on the length and complexity of the examination. Most insurance companies fully reimburse the cost of MRI examinations. With the introduction of the ELLEGRO, we continue our heritage of economically providing the highest level of excellence in equine care in New England.

Dr. Myhre and the Myhre Equine Clinic and Imaging Center, with sponsors WOKQ, Profile Bank, and Poulin Grain, hosted the largest Equine Fair in New Hampshire at the Myhre Equine Complex. Several hundred attendees enjoyed a diverse and exciting lineup of demonstrations, seminars, speakers, more than fifty vendor exhibits in the indoor arena, and horse-drawn wagon rides. Tours of the hospital facilities enabled the public to see the cutting-edge-technology diagnostic and therapeutic advances that are available only at the former Rochester Equine Clinic facility. Diagnostics such as their latest CT Scan (computed tomography), digital x-rays, nuclear medicine, and an MRI (Magnetic Renosance Imaging) unit for horses (soon to arrive within the month)!

Events at the High Knoll Equestrian facility included a diverse line-up of demonstrations. Dressage with Jackie Smith, Eventing with former Olympic Team rider Denny Emerson, fox hunting, vaulting, training and mounted shooting were among the long list, as well as The New England Ski Joring Team and Seacoast Polo Club. The Dover Mounted Police and the Working Dog Foundation were all there to contribute to an outstanding lineup. At the end of the day the Kentucky Derby Party was attended by over 100 people who watched the race on a big screen TV while enjoying traditional Derby faire. All profits benefited the Academy for Equine Science High School and High Knoll Equestrian Center Therapeutic Riding Program. The 10th annual Equine Affaire in the Northeast was held at the Eastern States Exposition November 8-11, 2007, and had something to offer to horse enthusiasts of all ages, all breed persuasions, all levels of expertise, and all equine disciplines.

The GLC 5500 Demo Ring, located in the Mallary building, had standing room only, while Dr. Myhre returned as a featured presenter to Equine Affaire by popular demand.

Dr. Myhre opened with a riveting presentation opening with a discussion about the number one killer of horses, colic. On display was the Myhre Equine Clinic's state-of-the-art closed circuit tv allowing the audience to observe an 11 year old, Morgan mare who was recovering at the clinic following another successful colic surgery performed by Dr. Myhre.

Following his passion for teaching, Dr. Myhre, a former Adjunct Professor at the UNH and UMass, offered the attendees a plethora of information on various equine veterinary topics including equine vitals, body conditions and general health issues.

Attendees were invited to the MEC booth (424) in the Better Living building for the opportunity to speak personally with Dr. Myhre.

Dr. Grant Myhre, D.V.M. recently participated in the World's premier continuing education meeting for equine veterinarians. The American Association of Equine Practitioners' (AAEP) 52nd Annual Convention, held in December 2006, offered the latest advances in equine health care. Scientific sessions, practice management seminars and hands-on workshops on topics ranging from lameness to reproduction were attended by an international gathering of over 2,500 veterinary professionals. Many of the sessions focused on providing new equine health care techniques that can be applied immediately to a veterinarian's daily practice.

The American Association of Equine Practitioners, headquartered in Lexington, Ky., was founded in 1954 as a non-profit organization dedicated to the health and welfare of the horse. Currently, the AAEP reaches more than 3 million horse owners through its over 9,000 members worldwide and is actively involved in ethics issues, practice management, research and continuing education in the equine veterinary profession and horse industry.

Dr. Myhre also presented the 90 minute Table Topic "Colic Surgery in the Standing Draft Horse", along with co-presenter, Dr. Dallas Goble. (University of Tennessee). The impetus to this presentation was the successful corrections of a large colon torsion in a 2800lbs. Belgian draft horse at the Myhre Equine Clinic and both presenters extensive equine surgical experience. The Myhre Equine Clinic is a diagnostic, imaging and surgical equine referral hospital located in Rochester, NH. Dr. Myhre is co-authoring an article with Dr. Kevin Sherman, a veterinarian at MEC, about this case. The article is currently being reviewed at the American Veterinary Medical Association for publication.
